Thoughts on what next after Trump's SCOTUS defeat, why Macron is right on eurobonds, could Blue Owl be a canary in the coalmine, is Japan's PM Thatcher or Truss, and how close is Russia to collapse
Thanks Jack. I agree - I’ve been meaning to write about it for months, but there always seems to be something else more pressing. But I suspect Japan has played a far bigger part in the global economy and markets over the last few decades than is widely recognised, quite apart from the fact that it seems to be the laboratory for so many economic and financial phenomena…
An excellent and stimulating WoN. It is said that China is run by engineers while the US is run by lawyers. Indeed, many presidents have been lawyers. Would that we had a lawyer in the White House now. No lawyer would have attacked Supreme Court justices in the disgraceful way Trump has done. Maybe there is something to be said for the lawyerly society and its tendency to produce lawyer presidents.
Thanks Tony. Quite agree, it is the flagrant disregard for the rule of law that I think is most alarming about the Trump presidency, not least because it appears to be part of a wider global phenomenon (with Russia at the heart of it)
Trump looked deflated as well as angry at his emergency presser after the judgement. Unfortunately, now that the ice hockey is over, he is very likely to try to jog along the negotiations with Iran (where Aragchi runs rings around Chauncey Gardener Witkoff) with a mini-strike, not least to justify the $20 million a day cost of two carrier groups at sea. The defiant Iranians will regionally respond, and then Trump can launch the bigger war which his Israeli 'clients' want. With any luck, this means the Democrats win the mid-terms.
America allegedly has more lawyers than the rest of the world combined.. They also appear to have enough laws to meet any need. They also have,I believe, more prisoners than any other country except China. How come they have allowed the President apparently unlimoted powers of pardon. Is a Democratic Congress likely to attend to this enormous invitation to other gangsters to seek high office.
Thank you. Interesting! Good old French - I don't know enough about the economic reluctance to join in on defence + technology, but totally agree with you! Too many European countries rely on the US for defence - the Schuman Plan was set up for a very good reason! - De Gaulle became more circumspect about US reliance post Suez, which has kept France more independent - (apart from cultural pride!) In technology, the UK and Germany excel - it would be possible - it needs joined forces and funding!
Excellent, as ever, Simon.
Japan has been such an interesting economy over the past 50 years, only sometimes given the attention it merits.
