There was something troubling about the reaction of parts of the British media to the government’s budget this week. Some relatively minor volatility in the bond markets that partly reflected global factors and at no point was outside the typical range of market moves in response to a major fiscal event was presented by much of the media as if the country stood on the brink of another Liz Truss moment. It is hard to avoid the suspicion that some were rather hoping for exactly that.
