Ukraine has shown that all recent authoritative statements about war are already out of date. Surely the risk of plunging into vast military expenditure could be a grest waste of money. War has changed

I’d be quite sceptical about both generals and the MoD/industrial nexus with their love of big kit.

MOD has a poor procurement record, and as you say, the strategic defence initiative is probably out of date already. We need to get away from this idea of spending a fixed percentage of GDP, and work out what we actually need, and not what the arms industry lobbyists tell us we need.

Start with the most depressing and realistic and end with a bang. Just hope the World Cup produces some decent matches and goals amongst the data.

If you think it is necessary to join a bloc, then surely it makes sense to rule out rejoining the worst-performing political union. I think few people would object to joining a bloc whose sole focus is economic
